With the kind of depth Victoria United of the Pacific Coast Soccer League has on its roster, players must make their points quickly and definitively on the pitch. If they don't, United coaches have ample choice and will find somebody on the bench who will.
"Everyone on our team could start for most teams in this league, so when you get the chance, you have to do your best and make the most of it," said striker Mike Moon.
Moon did exactly that in scoring twice yesterday as the United blanked Khalsa Sporting Club of Surrey 5-0 at Royal Athletic Park. The United remained undefeated with three wins and a tie ahead of next Saturday's date at RAP against the Bellingham Rapids.
Moon has been a tireless striker in the winter Island league for Vantreights and for the United in the summer.
"It's a great feeling to be on a team with this much talent [as United has]," noted Moon, who hails from King Come Inlet on the north end of the Island.
And it certainly doesn't hurt to be playing on the United with seven members of the Province Cup-champion Gorge squad, instead of against them as Moon does when he's with Vantreights.
Matt Northrup also scored twice yesterday and Steve Scott once with goalkeeper Dan Kilpatrick picking up the shutout.
"My biggest challenge is keeping everybody happy [with playing time]," said United playing-coach Ben Hooker.
"Most of our subs could be starters on every other team in the league."
Across town yesterday in PCSL women's play at Hampton Park, Sarah Rhodes scored twice and Kate Hambleton once as the undefeated Victoria Stars clipped Surrey United 3-1 to improve to 4-0 atop the tables. The Stars, who have outscored the opposition 13-3 on the season, face Semiahmoo today at 2:30 p.m. at Hampton.
